How to Export Your Entire iCloud Photo Library to a Hard Drive

A step-by-step guide to exporting your iCloud Photo Library to an external hard drive or SSD on Mac — safely and completely.

Exporting your entire iCloud Photo Library to an external drive is one of the smartest things you can do for your photos. Here's how to do it properly.

Why Export to an External Drive?

  • Own your photos — don't rely solely on a subscription service
  • Save money — reduce or eliminate your iCloud storage bill
  • Peace of mind — a physical backup you control
  • Speed — local files open instantly, no waiting for iCloud downloads

  • Method 1 — Using Migrate Moments (Recommended)

Migrate Moments automates the entire process, including downloading originals from iCloud and organising them by date.

  • Download Migrate Moments free on your Mac
  • Connect your external drive
  • Open Migrate Moments and click Scan library
  • Set your archive age cutoff — for example, photos older than 2 years
  • Select your external drive as the destination
  • Click Export to SSD
  • Wait for the export to complete — Migrate Moments downloads in smart batches so your Mac never fills up
  • Once done, click Delete from iCloud to reclaim your storage

  • Your photos are organised automatically into year and month folders. Nothing is deleted until verified on your drive.

Method 2 — Using the Photos App (Manual)

You can export manually through Apple's Photos app, but it's slow and tedious for large libraries.

  • Open Photos on your Mac
  • Select the photos you want to export — Cmd+A for all
  • Go to File → Export → Export Unmodified Originals
  • Choose your external drive as the destination
  • Click Export

  • The downsides of this method are significant. It doesn't download iCloud-only photos automatically, there's no automatic organisation by date, no verification before deletion, and it takes much longer for large libraries.

    Tips for a Successful Export

  • Make sure your external drive has enough free space before starting
  • Keep your Mac plugged in during export
  • Stay connected to Wi-Fi so iCloud originals can download
  • Don't quit the app mid-export

  • After Exporting

Once your photos are safely on your external drive, reduce your iCloud storage plan and save money every month. Most users drop one or two tiers after a full export.
